The anthropocene when human activity started to have significant impact on the planets, climate and ecosystem. Earth is a complex system that is the interaction of rock, air, water and life. Earth is composed of four systems which are: biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere. The biosphere is composed of the living things. Geosphere include metallic core, soil, solid rock and sediments. Hydrosphere include water at its different forms such as ice, underground water, water vapour, water in rivers, lakes and streams.. Atmosphere is compose of mixture of gases surrounding the earth.
Key life supporting processes is the community of living organisms and their interaction with the non living components within their environment. Ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals and other organisms as well as weather and landscape work together to form suitable life. The ecosystem functions are regarded as a subset of ecological processes and ecosystem structure. Natural processes in turn are the result of complex interaction between living organisms, chemical and physical components of ecosystems through the universal driving forces of matter and energy.
For the institution these are more relevant as the programs offered include Agriculture(crops and animals sciences), Forestry and resource management, Land and water management and Home economics. The videos can be used for more emphasis on issues of climate change. The environment concepts are relevant and can make students to understand and appreciate the earth.

Climate change is a cross cutting issue and there is a rapid change due to the actions of humans. That is why the globe is facing many natural disasters such as cyclone, flood, severe droughts etc.
What is not known is that the delay in responding to climate change will jeopardize the human life and livelihoods. In Home Economics curriculum there are courses like Environmental health and Appropriate technology which specifically discuss the topic related to climate change. The emphasis is on major environmental issues, special health problems that people encounter, human ecosystem, environmental education, energy conservation, forestry development and disposal of refuse. what is missing is that African countries has to develop the policies, models or coping strategies to adapt to climate challenges. Some of this coping mechanism could be practising conservation agriculture, improve irrigation systems, protection of wetland ect, this could contribute to food security.

Learning action 1 helped me to develop a common understanding of sustainable development and ESD. It helped in the review of our institutional vision and mission statement to see if it reflects some of the principles and commitments of strong sustainability and ESD. It further helped to think on how to modify the programme towards achieving the SDG4.
By identify the gaps in the programme which will help in reconstructing the programme that will create an enabling environment for ESD and to bring about the systemic change. The institution needs to increase the capacity of the educators so that they acquire more skills and knowledge about ESD, in order for them to deliver ESD more effectively. Emphasis will be on designing teaching and training models which are learner centered , stimulate learning and promote core competence. Also they should empower learners to transform themselves and their societies.

MISSION STATEMENT OF LESOTHO AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
LAC is committed to providing professional education and training, promoting research and community outreach and providing guidance on commercialized agriculture, through combining quality theory, practical and research methodologies.

VISION STATEMENT OF LESOTHO AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
By 2030 LAC shall be a center of excellence, guided by appropriate competent graduates, and responsiveness to clientele needs. These are the pillars of our development agenda.

To what extent does it reflect your understanding of sustainable development?

The mission and the vision of our institution reflects the the definition of SD as it provides quality education that will enable graduates to be competent and respond to the clientele needs. As most courses offered in our institution are practical oriented, learners are being empowered and motivated so that they can improve their life, in particularly for employment and entrepreneurship.

To what extent does it reflect the definition of sustainable development that reads “Sustainable Development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”? Do you think this is needed or not?
To a larger extent as LAC is aimed to provide quality education. When learners obtain quality education they will be motivated and empowered so that they can improve their lives and respond to the needs of the community.

To what extent does your institution’s Vision and Mission statement reflect the objectives of ESD and the GAP?

To larger extent because it encompasses the cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioral learning objectives. The skills and knowledge that are acquired are very transformative as they integrate sustainability principles, empower and mobilize youth through new research methodologies, community outreach and respond to the clientele needs.

How would you reframe/restate your of institution’s Vision and Mission statement to more substantively reflect SD and ESD (based on your understandings of these concepts and your context)?

    VISION STATEMENT
BY 2030 LAC shall be a center of innovation and excellence, guided by appropriate research, renowned for competent graduates who are responsive to present and future clientele needs. These are the pillars of our development agenda.
