Our change project which is “Inclusion of Persons with Disability at ECOT” has wide ranging implications on the ECOT community and the entire country of eSwatini. Firstly, our ability to remove or reduce the marginalisation of disabled person groups we will attract a wider range of students for within and without our borders (those who are disabled themselves and those who prefer to study in more diverse environments). This will in-turn lead to a more diverse industry which will be better equipped to deal with a wider range of engineering challenges and societal issues.
in reply to: Understanding Sustainable Development #5143Sustainable development is a learning process through which we can, (if we choose) learn to build our capacity to live more sustainably.
As teachers of future Civil Engineering professionals if we instill sustainability principles in students we prepare the industry to become more sustainable. If these principles are encouraged at pre-Graduate level the professionals are more likely to adopt these in their professional lives and work in the industry.
in reply to: Understanding Sustainable Development #5142Sustainable development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
In my field ESD is important in that how we train students to design and construct various infrastructure elements can have a very negative impact on future generations. This requires us to teach design and construction methods which have little negative impacts on the future generations. If we design and build building which have less of an impact on the environment we contribute a lot to ESD.
in reply to: Understanding Sustainable Development #5141In ECOT inclusivity is a challenge in that a number of vulnerable groups are marginalised from admission to graduation. We are not user-friendly to a number of disabled persons group like, visually impaired, physically disabled and hearing impaired.
in reply to: Understanding Sustainable Development #5140Sustainable development is the drive to be more responsible in our attempts to develop our world for future generations. To create a better world and living experience for ourselves and future generation far into the future beyond our own lifetime.
in reply to: Your thoughts on the case studies. #4551I enjoyed the Mary Mount project. Clean up campaign go a long way in reducing our disruptive footprint on the earth. Also the industry which i am involved in (Construction) is notoriously a large contributor to pollution and waste so anything to reduce that is well received.
in reply to: About yourself and your initial Change Project #4550Hello Everyone,
I am a Civil Engineering lecturer at ECOT. I am glad to be part of this training initiative and I am grateful for the opportunity. I’m trust this program will assist me in making relevant changes to our Diploma in Civil Engineering curriculum which is currently under review, The Change Project we have decided to do is related to Inclusivity (making ECOT better suited to catering to the needs of certain vulnerable group, eg. those living with disabilities).
