Learning Action 3: A Case Story

Please complete the following questions relating to your Change Project.

Step 1: Change Project Tracking:

The third step in the ‘Sustainability Starts with Teachers’ programme is to critically reflect on transformative learning approaches and how we can integrate them into our teaching. It also focuses on how to transform learning environments to be more sustainable and more socially just.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this learning action, you will have:

  • Selected and chosen a range of methods that could help with a transformative learning (T-learning) approach to ESD, and which can also potentially contribute to wider social learning.
  • Encouraged students to contribute to ‘green, socially just campus’ developments in order to transform learning environments that model sustainable development praxis.

Starting out: Review your own practice

This Learning Action focuses on transformative teaching and learning methods, and on transforming learning environments. To start out, it could be helpful to do a reflective activity in which you look at what you are already doing. The task below will also help you to consider how you might extend or transform the methods you are already using or promoting amongst your students in your courses, and you could consider elaborating on the methods you already use, adding to them and trying out some new ones.

Most of the methods listed in the above Methods Review activity that we will undertake in the task are explained in more detail in the Fundisa for Change Methods and Processes booklet referred to earlier in the case story. The Fundisa [Teaching] for Change Methods and Processes booklet offers a good description of a range of different teaching methods. It is a very useful book to share with teachers who are in training.

Complete the task below, ‘Review of own Practice’, which asks you to reflect critically on the teaching and learning methods you use. Use your score to self-reflect on how you may extend or transform your teaching methods.
