Welcome to the Starts with Teacher Leaders for ESD Course!
This course is designed for Teacher Educators, TVET educators and ESD Leaders in our HEIs. Its purpose is to empower you as an ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) Leader who can model, inspire, and institutionalise transformative learning for sustainability across teacher education and vocational training systems.
This online course is part of the broader SSATL-ESD (Sub-Saharan Africa Teacher Leadership for Education for Sustainable Development) project, an EU-co-funded regional initiative that supports teacher education innovation across Africa and Europe.
About the Course
Sustainability Starts with Teacher Leaders is an action-oriented professional development course that supports you in leading transformation within your institution. You will co-design and implement an ESD Leadership Change Project, grounded in your local context and aligned to regional and global priorities, including the SDGs, the Africa 2063 Agenda, and the UNESCO ESD for 2030 framework.
Through this course, you will:
- Explore ESD in African teacher education and TVET contexts.
- Strengthen your distributed teacher leadership competences.
- Use transformative pedagogies to promote systems thinking, critical reflection, ethics, and action.
- Lead institutional change through collaborative and ESD Leadership Change Projects.
How to get around:
This course consists of 6 modules designed to guide you through a step-by-step journey of developing and implementing your ESD Leadership Change Project.
To get started:
- Click on “ESD Teacher Leadership Change Project Orientation” below.
- Then choose “Session 1: What is an ESD Teacher Leadership Change Project?”.

- After completing each session, click the green “Mark Complete” button at the bottom of the page.
- Your progress bar will update as you move through the course.
